Innovate or die, the saying goes. Whether you call it innovation, disruption or some other buzzword, brands big and small have frantically chased the next big idea for many decades. After all, the rewards can be great (survival notwithstanding), and forward-thinking innovators are heralded as heroes in boardrooms and on magazine covers  across the globe.

Consumers don’t necessarily want—or need—more stuff. Rather, they want “better” stuff, and a growing majority wants companies to move from “less bad” to “net good.”

As we shared in our recent report on New Consumers--those youthful, wired consumers looking to “purchase with a purpose”--it’s a time of radical contradiction as our new way of life is defined by more scarcity, complexity and speed—as well as more creativity, innovation and participation.

Marcas sustentables En el camino hacia la sustentabilidad, muchas marcas han adoptado mejores prácticas ambientales y han implementado políticas y procesos de negocio que permitan ofrecer productos y servicios en pro de la salud y el bienestar de las personas y las mismas comunidades, regiones y países donde se desarrolla su industria.

Hay tres aspectos fundamentales que las guían en ese camino:

Percepción de la marca

Refiere a la percepción que tienen los consumidores respecto a una marca, es decir, qué tanto han hecho las marcas para expresar y posicionar una reputación sostenible, de tal manera que sus usuarios tengan conciencia de que realmente lo son.

Sin embargo, éste no debe ser el objetivo de una marca sostenible, sino una consecuencia, ya que también sirve para que las propias empresas tengan mayores elementos respecto al desarrollo de estrategias sólidas con un bjetivo verde y no necesariamente mercantil. De esta manera, las marcas que han hecho algo que tenga un impacto positivo a favor del planeta y de la calidad de las personas son las que, evidentemente, cuentan con una mejor reputación por parte de las audiencias.

Justo en este renglón, aparecen las claves de dicha percepción: autenticidad, relevancia, diferenciación, consistencia, presencia, y la comprensión de las necesidades ambientales del planeta. Si una marca es perfectamente percibida en estos seis aspectos, va por buen camino,.

Actividades sostenibles

¿Y por qué son percibidas como marcas sostenibles? Pues además de sus respectivas estrategias de marketing y posicionamiento, hay elementos que no necesariamente son de dominio público, y refieren a los procesos de negocio de las marcas más verdes que involucran:

Gobierno (políticas). la implementación de políticas y mecanismos establecidos por las empresas y sus usuarios para gestionar los impactos ambientales y establecer y ejecutar con éxito programas ambientales.

Operaciones. Los temas mas importantes en su aplicación tienen que ver con el desempeño de la empresa en las operaciones como medida de la eficiencia energética, las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero, la gestión del agua, gestión de residuos y la gestión de las emisiones tóxicas. Transporte y Logística. El tercer elemento refiere al desempeño de la compañía en medir, informar y mitigar el impacto medioambiental de su transporte y logística, viajes de negocios, y los desplazamientos.

Engagement. ¿Qué tan involucrados están los actores relacionados a una empresa? La respuesta está en el grado en que la empresa reconoce y se relaciona con sus stakeholders.

Productos y servicios. Se enfoca en la cartera de productos de la empresa y una evaluación de sus atributos ecológicos, incluyendo la eficacia del producto, la producción sostenible y la evaluación del ciclo de vida.

Cadena de suministro. Finalmente, se analiza el desempeño de la compañía en cuanto a su capacidad de medir, informar y mitigar el impacto medioambiental de su cadena de suministro.

Influencia sustentable en intención de compra

El tercer gran atributo de estas marcas está en la capacidad no sólo de aplicar medidas sostenibles, sino también de poder influir en que sus audiencias se sumen a esta tendencia, de tal manera que mientras consumen una marca, hacen algo por el ambiente y de alguna manera asumen el compromiso de seguir haciéndolo a través de otras alternativas.

Las metas no se quedan en el punto de venta, ya que la tendencia sostenible involucra a los empleados, clientes y socios, de tal manera que todos los actores ayuden a mitigar los altos niveles de desconfianza en cuanto a la información que las empresas proporcionan sobre sus esfuerzos medioambientales.

Así, acciones, palabras y números ayudan a contar la historia de estas marcas que impulsan el cambio, la innovación, la voluntad de ser más sostenibles y rentables. Todo es cuestión de encontrar un equilibrio entre el rendimiento y la percepción, y ser transparente, abierto y honesto sobre el viaje (con sus ocasionales tropiezos) en el camino hacia la sostenibilidad.
